AI's Impact on the European Space Industry

83% of business leaders expect GenAI to have a positive or transformative impact on their business over the next five years (up from 74% last year). Six out of ten (61%) respondents plan to appoint a dedicated head of AI (up from 37% last year). However, only 7% reported widespread adoption of AI solutions in their business.[PwC report, 2024]

Our research at Costrum focuses on analysing what practical, real-world problems AI, especially GenAI, can solve in the European space industry. While many reports provide insights into AI adoption, they often lack a specific focus on the European space context.

The European space industry is made up of 1800 small and medium-sized companies, employing 33,000 people and generating an annual turnover of €3.9 billion (~50% of the total space workforce). Yet finding data-driven insights into how GenAI can specifically benefit this sector is challenging.

Our goal is to identify where GenAI can give Europe's space industry a competitive edge and where it may not be cost-effective. We aim to provide experience-based insights, practical do's and don'ts, and explore the most promising use cases of GenAI across various domains in the space sector.
